In His Petty Omniscience

In the exhibition „The Digital“ (2018) Thomas Musehold used Christian icons or ritual objects as templates for his sculptures. While habitus and design of the icons are owed to the Christian narrative, the artist is looking for ambiguities between objecthood and religious iconography. Like a prism, that splits light into its components, Musehold dissects his models both in content and form in order to expose layers of meaning. By virtue of accidental or invoked errors and conscious reworking, the objects are subjected to transformation in digital processes. 3D scan results and processing steps are combined to form a new whole according to his intention. As result of Musehold's artistic practice, hidden meanings of the templates are visually released and illuminate the religious context humorously or critically.
